American ale yeast batch has more of a hop bite. Tastes much like a cask conditioned British pale ale or ESB. Lots of hops but the fresh hops seem to smooth it out. Not quite fully carbonated at this point, but the NW ale yeast batch is tasting very smooth. One fermenter was in new ferm chamber and other garbage can with water. Fermentation temp with Am Ale was 68 deg F and NW about 72 deg F (got up to 77.9 F during a hot day.). Surprised here too, as NW is supposed to attenuate less and be sweeter and American ale attenuate more. Used WyEast 1332 Northwest Ale yeast on one and Wyeast 1056 American Ale yeast on the other. Not sure why so low.īig batch, max I could do in my 15 gallon pot without holding back water, when finished split into two 4.5 gallon batches into fermenter. Left it at 151 deg F and was 143 def F when I came back to it. Was busy picking the hops off the bines (took an hour or so.between 9 and 10pm) and did that while mashing. Well I think both of the fresh hop APAs are going to be a success. Maybe that is where I have to get my info.? Maybe that is what Todd was referring to.Īnyway, there has to be a good way to do this. ![]() If wet hops - which already are full of water - soak up way more water than normal hops, can't wwe get that back out by hanging the bag or squeezing? I'm thinking these should be added at the end of the boil and not added to the fermenter, so could see this is an issue if they soak up lots of water and are added to the fermenter. I don't know about other areas of the world, but here in the USA's Pacific Northwest (in particular Oregon and Washington), most microbreweries have fresh hop pale ale available for a limited time each fall.like most of September and into October. Better to dry your hops and then dry hop instead.īut when the process is done "properly" (I don't know what that is), it can have a really nice result. But also said he didn't like the practice because it soaked up too much water. Todd said to use 5 times the hops when wet. (And was going to use the APA recipe in the BCS book as a general guideline.). Surely you weigh it, or.? But others too, if you have a good ease help. Looks like you've got more experience with this than anyone else on this forum. Does anyone have any more info about the process, maybe especially Bob, a way to confirm what I am doing.? And Bob - I'd love to hear from you on this. Looks like BobBrews may have the most experience with this.(?) Bob - your advice looks to be "just grab am arm full or two of fresh hops and throw it into the boil." No offense Bob, that was not your exact quote but I am a very exact person. Is there a good rule of thumb on how to do that? And want to get that nice fresh hopped flavor, if possible.love that stuff. Fresh Hop / Wet Hop - just pulled off the vine. ![]() Not talking dry hopping, don't think.not added to fermenter, but adding to the boil. Perhaps some from last year (boil/bittering) - and will have to estimate Alpha, and remainder new fresh hops, and wIll need to pull off the vine (aroma/flavor). Want to use a bunch of my Cascade hops, brewed against the side of my house for this. All my former American Pale Ales were with WLP051. From almost 20 gallons 3 months ago, almost out.ģ) Due to the heat / early summer most crops (including my hops) are a couple weeks ahead, here in Oregon.Ĥ) Plan to brew a large batch of beer this weekend and probably split it between WyEast 1332 (NW Ale yeast - from Hales Ales) and American Ale Yeast 1056 (WLP001) - think it is from Sierra Nevada. It is one of my favorite things! Magical time of year, for reasons other than college football.Ģ) I NEED to produce some good beer ASAP. Before I posted anything I wanted to check and see if there was any info on fresh hopping (aka wet hopping).ġ) I LOVE early fall when we can get Fresh Hop Pale (wet hop?) at micro brews here in the Pacific Northwest. ![]()

For a change, I think the black folks actually came out better in this deal. somewhere in the great Cosmic Scheme of Things, Culinary Division, it was decreed that green bean casserole would grace the holiday tables of white households, while baked mac-and-cheese would be the purvue of holiday feasts in black households. You seem like a man of taste, though I don't think that you are missing much not tasting this particular iconic dish. ![]() It's a difficult thing to explain) than you are actually participating in. I don't blame you for trying to gain knowledge about this seemingly bizarre cultural phenomenon but this is probably one of those things that you are better off just reading about (hey, we're the same people that were buying Barry Manilow records when Earth, Wind, and Fire were hot. So what I'm saying is this-what's the point? Surely you are comfortable enough with what you eat already as a tradition to not really want to step into the world of bad white bread vittles? Don't do it, says I. Pretty much it's just cooking beans in mushroom soup with onions. And really, what's not to like? But there just isn't much to it (though I will say that I have had it on my plate plenty of times at my mother in law's house and I like it ok). OTOH, my wife's family, well, let's just say that Green Bean Casserole is kind of a staple. Green Bean Casserole is not, at least in my experience, for everybody-then again, as you say, the only people that I know who eat it are kind of, well, lilly white. ![]() It's nice and I appreciate it every time it happens. Most people have never eaten meals at the holidays as elaborate as the ones that I have eaten for the last 44 years. Sandy, you know, I am from one of those families who would, literally, laugh if this stuff hit the table. Now all you need is some canned green beans, some bacon, little onions, cream of mushroom soup, (and for the daring, pimento-but that's really pushing it) and some canned fried onions (though I reccomend Zapp's Crawtators as a sub). Well then, you're all set! All you need is a bonafide white guy and you too can soon be eating one of the most traditional staples for "White Folks who can't cook"! I know there are white folks reading this. Unless something else is at work: The dish is either so exquisite or so embarrassing that most white people send it into hiding whenever they entertain black guests. ![]() In any case, I've concluded that this dish, which these ads tell me is so iconic, is definitely near and dear only to white people, and among those, only to a small subset. Surely America's made more progress towards becoming an integrated society than the answer to this last question indicates. So far, the answer to that question has been the same as the answer to the first one. Okay, then, have you ever been served it? I got the same answer from every last one of them: "No." I began asking all my black friends and acquaintances: Have you ever fixed Green Bean Casserole? I'm guessing that it's one of the main reasons Cream of Mushroom is Campbell's second- or third-biggest seller, after Chicken Noodle and maybe ahead of Tomato, and it's probably the only reason some people buy French's French Fried Onions at all. Finding a new bike can be a challenge and sticking with what works has advantages. If you have a good bike you love then consider a conversion. That doesn't mean you shouldn't convert a bike you own. There are some inexpensive electric bikes out there that are excellent to ride so if the price is the driving factor that's a better option. Not only that but a great conversion kit on a not great bike isn't going to be a lot of fun. In most cases, it's just not going to be worth it. If you are considering converting a bike you own to electric power only for cost savings, think hard about it. In turn, that means you might not get much of a deal on an electric bike conversion. That means if you are converting a bike, you already own, you are purchasing the expensive pieces for the conversion. Large manufacturers place huge orders and get great deals on all the pieces. Frames and components benefit greatly from economies of scale. When it comes to electric bikes the price is in the motor and especially the battery. Should I buy an electric mountain bike instead? If mid-drive seems overwhelming this is an excellent option. Powering the wheel does change the way the power delivery feels and making the front wheel heavy can affect the handling of the bike. ![]() The conversion process is very simple and depending on how the battery mounts the weight distribution can be quite good. Different standards make it challenging to figure out exactly what you need and there's more work involved in adding the parts.Įlectric Bike Wheel Conversion: Swapping either a front or rear wheel for an electrified version is a good balance. The only downside is pricing and packaging. The weight sits low in the frame and the power gets applied to the crank for a more natural sensation. Mid-Drive Conversion: The best electric bikes tend to be mid-drive and the same is true of conversion kits. There's very little challenge with making it work but at the end of the day, it doesn't work all that well. This strategy isn't all that efficient but it's simple. A roller pushes against the tire on the wheel and when the roller turns the wheel turns. If you’ve got a mountain bike you use for commuting duties you could change tires and make one of these systems work. There’s none in this list for that reason but you can still get a sense of what they are. What are the different types of conversion kits?įriction Drive Conversion: This type of system doesn’t really work with anything other than slick tires. You can source the battery yourself but be sure about what you are getting. If you find yourself browsing through options and landing on something at an unbelievable price, look for the battery. You need a battery make sure the kit you select has it. There's not a huge explanation needed for this. Make sure you have an understanding of what you are getting and what that means for riding it in your location. Other systems might be okay but require insurance. ![]() Some systems will make trails off-limits. Check the size of the motor, does it have a throttle, what is the max assisted speed, as they all change the requirements.ĭepending on the system you end up with there are different requirements. They change depending on what country you are in but, for example, in the US different states have different laws and it can even get more local than that. The laws governing electric bikes are hyper-local. Buying a kit puts a lot more of the responsibility on your shoulders. There are different options available in different parts of the world. A lot of the time if you buy a bike the manufacturer has been through the process of ensuring what you are buying is okay in your location. It's much easier to go afoul of what's allowed when buying a kit. The most important thing you need to do when considering an electric bike conversion is to check the laws and regulations where you are. How to choose electric conversion kits for mountain bikes Is my electric conversion kit legal? Knobby mountain bike tires will make a bit more noise but as long as it’s less than 2.5 inches wide they will work just fine with this system. The battery and motor are a single unit that clamps to the seat post and pushes against the rear tire. Stick with one or two batteries and you can stay street legal in Europe or add a third battery for a bit more range, and speed, in the US. Rubbee X might not be the best option to shred single track but if you are looking to convert a mountain bike to commuter duty it's an excellent option.
